Web-based Educational Knowledge Sharing System Development
The Client
The client who came from the U.K. wanted to develop a web-based educational knowledge sharing system to share learning resources between lots of educational authorities, institutes, or organizations. By using this system, teachers, tutors and education professionals can share their opinions, knowledge or other resources with each other, such as uploading articles, courses, etc.
Business Requirement
This project was a web-based system which could allow Regional Educational Authorities (REAs) and City Learning Points (CLPs) users including students and teachers to upload, download, modify or access learning resources and enhance the knowledge database.
The Project
The knowledge sharing system provides multi-level access to students, teachers and other authorized users (users who have licenses). Each authorized user manages his/her own users along with the categories of learning resources to be stored and shared between users. Furthermore, the knowledge sharing system can be implemented within an Internet setup by individual authorized users to manage their internal knowledge sharing network, without connecting to the primary network on the Internet.
The benefits of building the knowledge sharing resource over the network are multi-level access for high security, providing advanced search function, cross-authority sharing resources, and customized user interface.
Solution
The web-based system would allow users to follow a hierarchy of access levels to use the system. Some educational organization for example, REAs and CLPs can use this sharing system with authorized licenses. The solution was also designed to be implementable at the Internet level to be accessed within restricted domains.
The knowledge sharing Educational authorized users need to register and get licenses to use network services. The authorized users can create the corresponsive user account and assign a username and password. The assigned user can login to the network and access its services. The visitor access can be used for teachers, students and other users such as students’ parents. Users can search resources based on selection criteria. Teachers can be both authors and editors in a specified license area. Authors can write learning resources such as articles or courses and editors can edit, update and publish resources.
The solution for this project was user friendly and requires minimum technical maintenance. The project had been developed by using Microsoft ASP 3.0 for the front-end and SQL Server 2000 for the back-end. The system was hosted on Window based environment IIS Web Server.
