Small businesses are confused about cloud computing

Last week a survey suggested an interesting phenomenon of small businesses working in the cloud. As everyone knows, the cloud is essentially outsourcing computing tasks of any number of varieties and has been the hot-button topic of the technology industry over the last two years. Meanwhile, it’s a natural fit for SMB organizations with greater agility and less existing legacy architecture than their enterprise peers. Surprisingly, less than one third of small businesses have heard of the cloud according to a Web survey. However, those who have heard of cloud computing largely don’t get it. This sad fact suggests that cloud providers are not doing a very good job of educating small businesses about what the cloud is and why they should care.

Outsourcing customers focus on SLAs

A recent survey, which was conducted by Accenture and the Shared Services and Outsourcing Network, showed that business strategy is getting short shrift in outsourcing relationships while outsourcing customers and providers focus excessively on basic service level agreements (SLAs). More than two fifths of the respondents said they spent too much time discussing SLAs rather than agreeing on business outcomes. However, only one fourth said they spent much time on SLAs, though, the time was decreasing.

For any managed service engagement, SLAs play an important part. However, paying more attention to SLAs may make the companies ending up getting stuck on SLAs and missing the opportunity to achieve wider business outcomes.

Views of IT outsourcing and broken TV connections

The IT outsourcing is a big business and in the UK it was worth £41.7bn in 2009.

It was about one fourth of the total UK business outsourcing sector. But strangely, If IT workers had anything to do with it the IT outsourcing would not be that big.

Three IT professionals said the IT workers from suppliers would not go the extra mile for the client at the housewarming party on 22nd May. In the case of advanced technology, a lot of processes are no longer core. What’s more, having a unique system is not necessarily a real advantage. On this occasion, outsourcing suppliers should demonstrate to their potential customers the reasons for their business are not core.

MillenniumIT, a trading software company leaded by Tony Weeresinghe, was acquired by the London Stock Exchange to replace its ailing two years ago. Generally speaking, it is a supplier of trading systems and support. Through it, LSE now has the fastest core trading system in the world.
