Amazon’s $199 Fire sparks supply, margin questions

Amazon’s billionaire Chief Executive Jeff Bezos unveiled the new Kindle Fire tablet computer on Wednesday at a lower-than-expected price of $ 199 which is raising widespread and fierce questions about Amazon.com Inc’s ability to keep up with demand and the device’s effect on the company’s already razor-thin profit margins.

Amazon expects it can rival with Ipad with much lower price, convenient appearance, etc. However, some industry participants express that the short supply of some specialized components and the holiday may limit how many Kindle Fire’s can be made out quickly. Besides, other analysts concern about the profit margins at Amazon, too. They express that Amazon always competes completely on price, sucking up losses when it enters new market.

Facebook cookies ‘fixed’ as Oz privacy bureaucrats investigate

While Facebook flip-flops over whether or not its track-after-logout cookies were or were not benign, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner is reportedly taking a look at whether or not the cookies breached privacy laws.

The OAIC is the renamed Australian Privacy Commissioner, whose wet-slap punishments inspire fear and fits of giggling among data collectors worldwide. Readers with long memories will remember the terrifying barrage the office unleashed on Google over its WiFi data collection, which include apologizing to users and providing “privacy impact statements” on any new data collection activities. The Australian is now reporting that the office is investigating Facebook’s use of cookies.

Ten IT outsourcing game changers from Gartner

Gartner, Inc. is an information technology reaserch and advisory firm headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, United States and providing technology related insight. According to the analyst firm, we’ll talk about the ten things or “game changers” in IT outsourcing.

1. The economy

In recent years the economy has been so bad that outsourcing has seen major changes, including suppliers sharing some of the pain that their customers are suffering and new delivery models emerged to help customers cut costs.

2. Generation Y

People who were born between 1982 and 2000 were known as generation Y. Now they are a significant portion of the workforce businesses and need to be equipped with the right kind of technology in place.

3. Globalisation

There are more choices of where to buy IT services but there are also new risks for CIOs to consider.

4. Sustainability/Green IT

Businesses are expected to lower their carbon footprints. Less paper is being used, less fuel on the aircraft because less weight is on the aircraft and it is much easier to use.

5. Cloud Computing

A quite simple is that Huntley said that “if you have not got a cloud strategy now get one immediately.”

6. Industrialised services

Within the next five years enterprise spending on industrialised services like software as a service and infrastructure as a service will reach $122bn.

7. Asset lift

The more that businesses buy IT as a service the less the need for internal assets.

8. Consumerisation

Consumerisation of IT will not only change the technology used in offices around the world but the way businesses interact and serve customers.

9. Unpredictability and risk

With the use of more and more suppliers and new relationships businesses must dedicate resources to asses the risks associated with working with suppliers.

10. Externalisation

It will be increasingly a case of how the IT department get other companies to do things for you rather than how do you do it yourself.

PH can be outsourcing hub for mobile apps

Today there is a huge demand for mobile applications across the world, because of the popularity of mobile or handheld communication devices. Many countries are well poised to take advantage of this trend, so is Philippines.

Ramon Pastor, the resource speaker at the sidelines of a Power Mac Center mobile app development seminar, said that talented Filipino developers can very soon catch up with other countries and provide here and abroad a robust supply of apps for mobile platforms. He added that the world’s demand is higher than the supply, so Philippines can well be on the world map for mobile apps. Moreover, Philippines has a huge pool of software and application developers who have been supplying the requirements of the country’s global IT outsourcing industry mainly in the fields of web and enterprise solutions. And what they have to do is to shift focus from enterprise solutions to mobile apps, said Pastor.
