Outsourcing vs. Offshoring

This election has been predominantly about jobs and job creation. Companies are now taking public sentiment and reputation in to account when electing to use domestic outsourcing instead of offshoring. We have seen a public backlash when it comes to outsourcing. It has become a dirty word in the Unites States.

Paul Harty, President of Seven Step Recruiting, is an expert in recruiting. He discusses domestic outsourcing, offshoring and company reputation management. Outsourcing works for a lot of companies in a variety of situations. Harty is careful to note that outsourcing doesn’t have to mean shifting jobs overseas. The true purpose of outsourcing is to allow a specialized firm to handle specific tasks, tasks that would not be cost-efficient for a firm to handle on their own.

There is a difference between outsourcing and offshoring. Learn more in my interview with Harty below.

1. What is the difference between Outsourcing and Offshoring?

Offshoring is simply one of many choices you have to make when outsourcing – and just one subset of the outsourcing process. The first decision to make is either a) to keep a certain company function and those skilled enough to perform that function in house, or b) to outsource it to a company that specializes in that area of expertise and is optimized to deliver that function cost-effectively.

Call center staffing is a perfect example. Most call centers are staffed with large numbers of people with similar profiles. Turnover is typically high and keeping a call center staffed often requires an ongoing hiring program that’s able to identify and bring on hundreds of people with similar backgrounds on pretty much a continuous basis.

Because of the arduousness of hiring and training, many companies prefer not to assume the costs and administrative burden of keeping their call centers staffed by in-house recruiters. Instead they “outsource” the work to companies that are experts at staffing call centers and who do it at scale. Only after deciding to outsource does a company begin to consider whether to use a domestic or offshore resource to deliver the service.

2. Why would a company chose to use either strategy?

For most companies both outsourcing and offshoring come down to answering the very basic question of “What is the goal?”  If the company’s objective is purely cost-driven, then offshoring to a company in the Asia Pacific region (APAC) may be a simple solution. If cost is part of the equation, but the more important driver is “quality,” we’re seeing a shift to domestic outsourcing, where ease-of access and the lack of language and time-zone barriers make it easy to keep a close watch on quality control.

If there are issues regarding brand equity or reputation in the mix, domestic outsourcing is rapidly becoming the only option. For instance, a lot of basic call center work that was being done in India just a few years ago is moving back to the U.S., even though it’s usually more expensive here. Companies seem to be figuring out there is a direct hit to the cost of their reputation when American customers become frustrated with cultural and language differences experienced with call center representatives.  These issues weaken the company-customer relationship – negating the on-surface savings that were the reason for offshoring in the first place.

Another factor in deciding whether to outsource is the generally negative public sentiment of being identified as an “outsourcer.”  This stigma has led many companies to bring their outsourced functions back to domestic providers. They’re still outsourcing, but without the cultural and language differences highlighting the fact that the function has been outsourced, it can easily go unnoticed by customers.  This helps avoid the damaging hit to the brand, negative perception of customer service and political fallout, and if the company desires it, avoid public awareness of the use of outsourcing at all.

3. As an outsourced hiring agency, what trends have you been noticing in the hiring process?

We are a recruitment outsourcing company that employs its people onshore instead of offshore.  At Seven Step we see a trend of companies bringing jobs that were once offshored to foreign companies for savings back to the U.S. because the cost benefits abroad are no longer as great.  Because the cost advantage has lessened, companies are now looking at their quality and customer experience and recognizing that the branding exposure and risk of offshoring may outweigh the benefit.  Therefore, manufacturing, call center and even software development jobs are now making their way back onto U.S. soil.

Companies are likely to still outsource to specialty manufacturers, call center management companies or recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) firms, but would prefer that those delivery centers be based in the U.S.  Recruitment Process Outsourcing was one of the last disciplines of the broader outsourcing business to gain general acceptance. Today, most companies, especially the larger ones, or those that tend to hire large numbers of people with similar profiles, have some or all of their recruitment strategy outsourced to providers like ours.

Buyer Guide to POS Systems

POS systems can be costly and time consuming to purchase.  Too many businesses buy the first system that they come across, only to find that it doesn’t meet their needs or is too complicated and confusing for employees to use.  Since systems are usually customized to your business, you won’t be able to simply re-sell or return a system that you don’t like.  Shop smart and buy the right system the first time.  Here’s how:

Choose software first.  Many businesses make the mistake of purchasing scanners, printers, and other POS equipment before deciding on a software program.  Don’t make this mistake!  The software that best suits your business might not be compatible with every device.  In shopping for software, you might find that a regular keyboard will work just fine and that you don’t even need an expensive touch screen display.

Use a system that has been successful in your industry. Make sure the vendor you select has experience in your industry.  For example, some vendors specialize in credit card processing for Ecommerce merchant accounts. Get references from other businesses before choosing a system.

Use the same source for all components. Many POS systems fail or are underutilized because the hardware and software are not fully compatible.  This usually happens because a business will use different vendors for each component.  Buying everything from the same vendor ensures compatibility.

Shop around. This is good advice for any equipment purchase, but is especially necessary when choosing a POS system.  POS systems are expensive, time consuming to implement, and difficult to return or switch.  Make an informed choice.

Get a demo or free trial. Never buy before you try.  Test out a basic cash sale, customer record, inventory features, refunds, purchase order, credit card processing and reports to make sure these basic operations work the way you want them to.  Most vendors will provide a demonstration of the software, and some even allow for a free trial.  Using the software is the best way to judge if it will meet your needs.

By following the tips in this guide, you should be able to make an informed choice about what type of POS system would benefit your business, and which vendor could provide you with the best system.  Choosing a POS system can be time consuming, but choosing the wrong one can result in wasted time and money.  Conversely, the right system can take your business to the next level, saving time, money, and resources.  It is important to consider all of your options and choose wisely.

Google Cloud Platform Program Shows Drive To Take Business From IT Giants

Google has a new cloud partner program that shows the company’s drive to go after old IT.

In a blog post today, Google provided some details about it with a link to a list of the technology and service providers that are part of the program.

It’s a short list but here’s what they are offering. Service providers deliver consulting services for the various Google Platform Cloud products. This would include the new Google Compute Engine, Google App Engine, Google Cloud Storage, Google Big Query and its prediction and translation APIs.

Technology partners provide integrations with Google Platform Cloud or use one of its services as a foundation for their products.

Google is hinting that it will use its partner program to pursue customers who want to migrate off legacy solutions.

According to the Google blog post:

For example, Orangescape Technologies, one of our partners, integrated Google App Engine as part of their platform to help United Biscuits, a leading manufacturer of biscuits and snacks in Europe, migrate their legacy Lotus Notes applications to the cloud.

BM Lotus Notes is fair game. But that’s an easier one to pick off. We’ve been seeing that migration for a while.

Interestingly, in the blog post, Google does not give much attention to the technology  partners. It mentions  Orangescape and Google core products that partners can leverage. But there is no other mention of the partners themselves.

Here are the technology partners just for the sake of showing them:

Google is just getting started with its partner program. Compare it to the Amazon Web Services partner program and you see just how green Google’s program really is.  Amazon Web Services has four different partner categories with lots of various resources for customers.

But these are early days. We are still in the phase of maturing cloud infrastructures. In context, it’s a decent enough start. Google has had success with its Google Apps partner programs that it used to help develop its app store.  The Google cloud platform partner program may be just the right follow up.

Android and Linux re-merge into one operating system

QQ截图20120320101317

Android has always been Linux, but for years the Android project went its own way and its code wasn’t merged back into the main Linux tree. Now, much sooner than Linus Torvalds, Linux’s founder and lead developer, had expected, Android has officially merged back into Linux’s mainline.

The fork between Android and Linux all began in the fall of 2010, “Google engineer Patrick Brady stated that Android is not Linux” That was never actually the case. Android has always been Linux at heart.

At the same time though Google did take Android in a direction that wasn’t compatible with the mainstream Linux kernel. As Greg Kroah-Hartman, the maintainer of the stable Linux kernel for the Linux Foundation and head of the Linux Driver Project, wrote in Android and the Linux kernel community, “The Android kernel code is more than just the few weird drivers that were in the drivers/staging/androidsubdirectory in the kernel. In order to get a working Android system, you need the new lock type they have created, as well as hooks in the core system for their security model. In order to write a driver for hardware to work on Android, you need to properly integrate into this new lock, as well as sometimes the bizarre security model. Oh, and then there’s the totally-different framebuffer driver infrastructure as well.” That flew like a lead balloon in Android circles.

This disagreement sprang from several sources. One was that Google’s Android developers had adopted their own way to address power issues with WakeLocks. The other cause, as Google open source engineering manager Chris DiBona pointed out, was that Android’s programmers were so busy working on Android device specifics that they had done a poor job of co-coordinating with the Linux kernel developers.

Google admits profiting from illegal Olympic ticket ads

The ads include unofficial London 2012 Olympics ticket resellers, as well as cannabis and fake ID card sellers.

These ads were promptly removed by Google after the BBC brought them to the company’s attention.

Google has also taken down links to illegal Olympic ticket resellers following requests from the police.

But the search giant told 5 live Investigates that the company keeps any money it might make from companies advertising illegal services before such adverts are removed.

Selling tickets on the open market without permission from the Olympic authorities is a criminal offence in the UK under the London Olympic and Paralympic Games Act 2006.

Promoting ticket touts

The Metropolitan Police, which is dedicated to stopping crime associated with the 2012 games through Operation Podium, said it is aware of LiveOlympicTickets and that the company is breaking the law.

However, as the company is registered overseas, it may be difficult to prosecute as it is outside the UK’s jurisdiction.

The maximum penalty fine for reselling Olympic tickets without authorisation from the Olympic authorities was raised last year from £5,000 to £20,000.

Despite this, Google has placed adverts for unofficial ticket resellers which are breaking the law by selling London 2012 tickets to customers in the UK.

In this case, LiveOlympicTickets was Google’s top sponsored link for 2012 tickets – and remained so for more than a week even after the Metropolitan Police had asked the search engine to remove the advertisement.

The company link was finally removed after 5 live Investigates contacted Google.

But research by the programme team found other sponsored Google adverts – for online cannabis sellers, fake ID cards, and fake UK passports.

Android Opens Online Training Site

In an effort to address its ongoing app inferiority complex, Google just unveiled an extensive online training site. Android Training is a series of tutorials, best practices, code samples and general advice that the company hopes will help the development community produce better apps.

Lessons cover everything from designing better navigation to implementing smoother multimedia streaming and optimizing battery life. In typical Google fashion, the effort is tagged “beta,” and Reto Meier, Android developer relations tech lead, blogs that the company plans to expand the offering considerably in coming months, including sample apps and course design for a broader range of general topics.

It may not be coincidental that Google launches this trainer now.

In recent weeks, research emerged suggesting that despite the Android operating system’s dominant market share, the majority of developers (51%) still plan to write for the Apple iOS platform in the coming year. Only 30% expect to write for Android.

While Android’s smartphone penetration is approaching 50% of the market, that reach has come at a price. The multiple handsets and iterations of the operating system make the platform a difficult target for many developers. In fact, the first lesson in the new Android Training program addresses “Designing for Multiple Screens.”
